How We Rank Luxury Candle Brands

Every brand in our ranking is scored out of 5 on five weighted criteria. The weights are fixed before scoring and applied identically to all 12 houses.

  1. 01Fragrance composition

    Weight 25%

    How the scent is built and how it behaves over a burn. We look for compositions with a discernible structure that evolves, rather than a single flat accord that fades. We also assess whether the fragrance matches its own description, and whether it survives repeated burning without turning thin or synthetic.

  2. 02Burn performance

    Weight 25%

    The measurable half of the score. Does the melt pool reach the full diameter within the recommended first burn? Does the wick self-trim or mushroom? Is there visible soot on the vessel after several hours? Does the stated burn time hold up? Brands that publish honest burn hours score better than those that overstate.

  3. 03Value per burn hour

    Weight 20%

    Price divided by stated burn time, adjusted for whether the vessel has a genuine second life. A candle whose container becomes a permanent object is worth more than the raw hours suggest, which is why reusable ceramic and refillable formats score well here.

  4. 04Vessel design and craft

    Weight 15%

    Whether the container is made or merely manufactured. Hand-thrown ceramic, mouth-blown glass and hand-decorated porcelain score highest. Printed labels on standard glass score lowest, however handsome the printing.

  5. 05Sustainability

    Weight 15%

    Wax origin, whether the fragrance is declared phthalate-free, packaging materials, and whether refills exist. Paraffin-based waxes are marked down. Brands that publish their wax composition score better than those hiding behind the phrase "proprietary blend".

What we exclude

We do not rank brands that decline to publish a wax composition or a burn time, because two of our five criteria cannot then be assessed. We also exclude private-label candles sold under a retailer’s own name where the actual manufacturer is undisclosed, and any brand whose entire range sits under $20, since that is a different category with different expectations.

Sources

Scores draw on manufacturer specifications, published ingredient and wax disclosures, retail pricing at the time of writing, and aggregated owner reviews across multiple retailers. Where a brand publishes no figure for a given specification, we say so rather than estimating.

Prices move and ranges change. Every figure on this site reflects the position as of February 2026, and we recommend confirming on the brand’s own site before buying. Where our figure and the brand’s differ, theirs is correct.

Independence

No brand pays for inclusion, position or a higher score, and no brand sees its review before publication. We do not accept sponsored placements in the ranking. If we ever add affiliate links, they will be disclosed on the page where they appear and they will not influence position, because the weights above are applied before any commercial consideration.

Corrections

If a specification here is wrong, we want to fix it. Brands and readers can write to us and we will correct the page and note the change. Accuracy on wax, burn time and price matters more to us than any individual ranking position.
